Ways for Decorating your Windows
You’re almost ready for the holidays, the tree is hung up with all the ornaments, lights are plugged in, and the holiday meals are being prepared. The only thing you might be missing is your windows. That’s right! You can decorate your windows to look like a winter wonderland. Before you get started on your windows, we have some tips that can help make this holiday project a successful one.
Special Paint
You probably don’t want the paint that’s going on your windows to be permanent. Make sure you use the correct paint before you get started on your project. Any interior water-based acrylic paint will work and so will a washable tempera paint. You can find both in many different colors at your local craft store.
Inside or Outside?
Whether you want your paint to be inside or outside, it’s totally up to you. Remember, you should paint the side that is most visible. If you have tinted windows, your paint might be hard to see on the inside if you painted the outside of your window.
Brushes
You don’t need to find the most fancy brush to do this project. A foam or brush with bristles will work. The finer the bristles, the cleaner the lines will be.
Prep the Paint
Before you paint your windows, you should paint with a splash of water, especially if it’s too thick. If the paint doesn’t stick well, add a few drops of dish soap to 1 cup of paint. Make sure you clean your windows with glass cleaner before you start so you can have a clean surface and it will help the paint from looking too dirty. If you have glass dividers on your windows, trim them with masking tape so you don’t accidentally get paint on them.
Once you have your supplies to paint with and you have prepared your windows, it’s time to paint your holiday design. Here are some painting ideas to help you get started.
- Use stencils
Print out holiday-themed paper stencils online then add some color and tape them onto your window. Make sure you place your stencil on the side you’re not going to paint on. This will help those who aren’t artists make the most beautiful and impressive designs. You can also use painters tape to help with your designs. Just make sure that it has low adhesion, which will save your window panes from sticky tape residue.
- Painting Sticks
Painting sticks are like markers with paint inside. They are easy to use and they don’t leave a big mess if you’re doing this project with your kids. You can find these in all kinds of colors at your local craft store.
- Frost the Windows
If you don’t get a lot of cold winters but you want that frosty feel on your windows to help make your home seem nice and cozy, you can frost your windows. Use ½ cup of warm water and mix in ⅓ cup of epsom salt until the solution is very saturated and the salt stops dissolving. Once the salt is dissolved, add three drops of dish soap to help it adhere to the glass window. Next, you’ll use a sponge to blot the windows with the mixture you just created. Place this anywhere you want the glass to look frosted. If you see any drips, you can use a paper towel to clean it up.
- Spray Snow
You can also try spraying snow onto your windows to make them look more frosted with a can of spray-on snow. You can find this at your local craft store as well as any hardware store. It’s simple and easy to clean when you want to remove it. This will give your windows that perfect winter feel.
How to Remove Paint from Your Windows
When the holiday season is over and spring is starting to arrive, you will want to remove that frosted look from your windows. Here’s how you can do that. Simply moisten the paint with window cleaner or soapy water and allow it to soak into the paint for a few minutes. When it’s softened up, you can use a razor blade to scrape the paint off your windows. You want to try not to scratch your windows by holding the razor blade at a 45 degree angle. Once all the paint is removed you can clean your windows with glass cleaner and you are ready for the warm summer seasons.
